Endowed "Named" Scholarship:  

A substantial donation that is given at one time. Additional money may be given on an annual basis. Normally the interest earned is used as the scholarship amount, dependent upon the contributor's request. The recipient may need to meet a certain criteria specified by the contributor. H-M-B seniors of the current school year are eligible. A completed application must be submitted.

 

NEIL BAKER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Neil Baker established a scholarship in his name in 1999. Neil died at the age of 86 on August 21, 2001.
Neil was born on January 24, 1915, the son of Myron S and Jessie E (Perry) Baker. Neil married Jenny Adams in June 1964.  He farmed all his life, staying on the farm until his health made it impossible to do the work. He moved to Hazelton in 1995. His winter hobby was woodworking, making many useful things.

MIKE MASTEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Mike Mastel Memorial Scholarship was established in 2009. Mike Mastel was a 1975 graduate from Hazelton High School. Mike was born on June 12, 1957 in Linton, the son of George and Anna Mary (Rohrich) Mastel. Mike took over his father's trucking business after his father's retirement in 1979. Mary Jo Keller became Mike's wife in 1982. Mike and Mary Jo and their 3 sons, Matt, Mason, and Michael Jr., made their home in Hazelton where they ran their trucking business. Mike enjoyed fishing, skiing, golfing, traveling and riding motorcycle, camping and spending time at his cabin on Lake Oahe. Mike died on March 31, 2008. Mike and Mary Jo have always been supportive of HMB Dollars for Scholars. By establishing this memorial, in Mike's name, Mary Jo and her sons continue to show their support and generosity to the community as Mike always did. Mike made a huge impact on everyone he met and he will always be missed but not forgotten.

STEWART R. MATTHEWS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Stewart R. Matthews Scholarship was established in 2007. Stewart was born and raised in the Hazelton area. He graduated from Hazelton High School 1934 and moved to Minnesota in 1936. He worked in the Forestry Department from 1945 to 1980. Stewart passed away in June 2005. Marv Matthews, son of Stewart, spoke at the 2007 graduation and announced the first recipient of his father's scholarship. Stewart bequeathed a generous amount of money to H-M-B Area Dollars for Scholars. His bequest shall become a perpetual fund with the income being used for annual scholarships.  Stewart established this scholarship for students furthering their education at a two-year or four-year college or university. He wanted the scholarship available to students who have maintained at least a B average and have been active in community, church, and school activities.

ARLEY SCHMIDT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Arley Schmidt Scholarship was established in 2010. Arley (Beastrom) Schmidt was born in Hazelton in 1927. She attended school in Hazelton. After graduating she attended Valley City Teacher's College receiving her teacher's standard certificate. Arley met Edward Schmidt in 1947. They married and made their home and farmed five miles northwest of Hazelton. While raising their 9 children, Arley returned to college and graduated from Mary College in 1971 with a degree in Elementary Education.  

Arley taught school at Danbury Rural School for 2 years (1945-1947) and Title 1 at Hazelton School for many years, retiring after 20 years of teaching. Arley and Edward were members of the Hazelton Historical Society, American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, and Hazelton Senior Citizens. She loved to cook, bake, quilt, garden, research family history, cook meals for the community, and visit with family and friends. Arley and Edward have supported H-M-B Area Dollars for Scholars for many years and the family requested memorials to H-M-B Dollars for Scholars. Arley's love for teaching is evident. This scholarship will be awarded to a student that will pursue their degree teaching.
